Peace
Lutheran Church began in October 1960. A nucleus of 110 communicant
members and 115 baptized children were released by Mount Olivet
Lutheran Church (our Mother church) to organize the new
congregation. The late Rev. Herbert A. Schwandt having been
installed as a Mission Developer on July 24, 1960 was the first
pastor of the church. Worship services were held in the Senator
Theater in far northeast Washington, DC until 1962 when we moved
into our present location.

Under Rev.
Schwandt’s leadership, the church had many accomplishments. Among
them was an active Sunday School, Adult Bible classes, choirs, a
Food & Clothing Center, annual “Honor the Graduates” programs and
the Hope Club for our senior members. He served our congregation
until his retirement on April 30, 1996 |

On February 22, 1998, Rev. James Wiggins,
Jr. was installed as pastor of Peace Lutheran Church. Under his
leadership, we started two worship services: The traditional worship
service at 8:00 a.m. and the contemporary worship service at 11:15
a.m. every Sunday except the 5th Sunday when we have
Unity Sunday service at 11:15 a.m. Sunday school is at 9:30 a.m. and
Adult Bible Class at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday. We also have the Peace
Discipleship Development Institute (PDDI) that offers various Bible
studies. On November 13, 2000, the church purchased what is now our
New Ministry Building as a part of God’s plan to help us to fulfill
our vision for mission and ministry.
Since December 2001, various members have
been appointed by Pastor Wiggins and commissioned and installed as
lay ministers of Christian Education, Music, Administration,
Outreach, Pastoral Care and Youth. These lay ministers assist the
pastor in serving the congregation. There is also a Discipleship
Ministry that consists of the Pastor, the church officers and
various members. This ministry is under the leadership of the
President of the congregation.
Since 2003, our
ongoing project is to raise funds to expand our church properties
and parking facilities.
At the December 2010 congregation meeting,
Rev. James Wiggins, Jr. announced that he had accepted the call to
become Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Florida.
He left Peace in January 2011. He will be missed but the Mission
for Peace Lutheran Church goes on. |
|
2011 -
|
Due to the decline in church attendance,
we now have one worship service at 10:30 am. The Urban Contemporary
worship service will be on the first and third Sundays and the
Traditional worship service on the second and fourth Sundays. On
the fifth Sunday, there will be alternating worship services with
the Urban Contemporary service one fifth Sunday and the Traditional
service on the next fifth Sunday. Holy Communion will be available
at all worship services.
In February 2011, we began to "go green"
by using the "This Far By Faith" Hymnal for the hymns
and various sections of the worship service. Doing this has
decreased the size of the bulletin and has helped us save paper. |

Lutheran’s Belief |

The Lutheran Church
– Missouri Synod
teaches and responds to the love of the Triune God: the Father,
creator of all that exists; Jesus Christ, the Son, who became human
to suffer and die for the sins of all human beings and to rise to
life again in the ultimate victory over death and Satan; and the
Holy Spirit, who creates faith through God’s Word and Sacraments.
The three persons of the Trinity are coequal and coeternal, one God.
Being “Lutheran,”
our congregations accept and teach Bible-based teachings of
Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian
Church in the 16th century. The teaching of Luther and
the reformers can be summarized in three short phrases: Grace
alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone.
|
|
Grace Alone |
Faith Alone |
Scripture Alone |
|
God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful,
rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus,
His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly. God loves
the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel
against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus, His Son,
to love the unlovable and save the ungodly. |
By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all
time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for
them. Those who hear his Good News and believe it have the
eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and
gives people forgiveness through Him. |
The Bible is God’s inerrant and infallible Word, in
which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of
salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the sole rule and norm for
Christian doctrine |

Communion |

|
At Peace, we gladly celebrate the Lord’s
Supper every Sunday in common confession of our faith that we
receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in, with, and under the
bread and wine. We believe that this Sacrament was given to God’s
people to strengthen our faith, receive the forgiveness of sins and
God’s love.
The Apostle Paul tells us that anyone who
participates should “examine” themselves before they eat of the
bread and drink of the cup. Those who participate in an unworthy
manner, have doubt, or hold a different belief, do great harm to
themselves and should not participate. (1 Cor. 11:28-29).
Self examination involves asking yourself:
-
Am I a sinner, who trust alone in Jesus Christ for
full and free forgiveness from all my sins and has not refused to
forgive and love?
-
Do I believe that with the bread and the wine the
Body and Blood of Christ are truly presenting the Sacrament?
-
Do I intend to turn away from sin by the power of
God’s Holy Spirit and live as God’s new creation?
All who can answer yes to these questions
are welcome to join in our celebration. If you would like help
understanding what we believe at Peace, please speak with one of our
elders or lay ministers |
